My Recovery (and Depression) Music List - And Yes They are the Same
Throughout my wallowing in sadness and the process of recovery, music has been there for me. I created a song list over the past two years composed of songs that have consoled, encouraged and resonated with me. In some of them I can relate to all of the lyrics and for others there is a specific line or two that appeal to me. But all of them have been played repeatedly (just ask my kids) in my car as I am driving to school, my program or just about anywhere.
One thing that I have learned in recovery is that sometimes you need to either self-soothe or distract yourself when you are having a hard time. Music can do either, or or both. For me when I’m really struggling, I like to belt out the lyrics (no worries friends, I just do this when I am alone in the car). Listening (and singing) along with music can diffuse strong emotions, comfort or inspire.
Over the past few months, during several groups, I have been asked to share a song that has comforted or helped me in recent years. I struggle each time to pick the right one for that particular moment. Everyday, or even hour to hour, it can be a different one. And I second guess and over think the decision. I am going to solve this problem by sharing my top picks with all of you. If you are looking for inspiration or just a distraction, or for some humor (as my tastes are quite eclectic) feel free to explore my list!
